Defense argues media coverage of man accused in stepdaughter AJ Hadsell’s death will impact jury sel

THIS AFTERNOON THE NORFOLK MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING HIS 19-YEAR-OLD STEP- DAUGHTER ASKED THE JUDGE TO BE TRIED IN A COURT OUTSIDE OF HAMPTON ROADS. WESLEY HADSELL FACES MURDER CHARGES FOR THE DEATH OF A-J HADSELL IN 2015. OUR KAYLA GASKINS WAS IN THE SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY COURTROOM TODAY — AND KAYLA WHY IS HADSELL ASKING TO BE TRIED SOMEWHERE ELSE? (KAYLA) HADSELL AND HIS LAWYER WANT TO CHANGE THE VENUE BECAUSE THEY SAY THE INTENSE MEDIA COVERAGE OF A-J’S DISAPPEARANCE AND DEATH WILL MAKE FINDING AN UNBIASED JURY ANYWHERE IN HAMPTON ROADS — NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. (KAYLA) AJ WENT MISSING FROM NORFOLK IN 2015. HER BODY WAS FOUND A MONTH LATER IN A DITCH IN SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY. POLICE AND PROSECUTORS HAVE CHARGED HER STEPFATHER WITH FIRST AND SECOND DEGREE MURDER. THE MOTION PRESENTED IN COURT TODAY TO CHANGE THE VENUE WAS MORE THAN 130 PAGES LONG. IT INCLUDED A WIDE RANGE OF MEDIA COVERAGE — EVERYTHING FROM LOCAL OUTLETS — TO PEOPLE MAGAZINE. THE JUDGE DENIED TO MAKE A RULING ON THAT MOTION AT THIS TIME. HADSELL’S LAWYERS HAD OTHER REQUESTS TODAY. THE JUDGE DENIED A REQUEST TO LIMIT THE NUMBER OF PHOTOS OF AJ’S BODY THAT THE PROSECUTION COULD SHOW THE JURY DURING THE TRIAL. THE JUDGE ALSO DENIED MOTIONS FROM THE DEFENSE ASKING THE PROSECUTION TO PRESENT THEIR THEORY OF WHAT HAPPENED TO A-J. (KAYLA) THE DEFENSE ALSO ASKED THE JUDGE TO DENY ALLOWING ANY JAILHOUSE WITNESSES AT THE TRIAL. COMING UP AT 5:30 I’LL EXPLAIN WHY THE LAWYER ARGUED ALL JAILHOUSE WITNESSES SHOULDN’T BE ALLOWED — AND WHAT THE JUDGE HAD TO SAY ABOUT IT. IN THE NEWSROOM I’M KAYLA
